Day two Kalgoorlie to Norseman,
Kalgoorlie is the major Gold mining town of the West with a larger than life statue of paddy hanan (one of the original Gold Prospectors)in the town, kal is also known for its Ladies of the night with some of the establishments doing tours of the themed rooms!!
On to Norseman its very hot 40+ celsius and its even hot in the Winnebago, the only wildlife we saw were three wild goats. There is also lots of Salt lakes where the land has been cleared and the salt takes over ( Will download pics soon)
By the time we reached Norseman we were soooo hot we went to the pub and had a large shandy - God that went down well (: . The streets are sooo wide you could run a four lane highway through. We are camping in the Bush for the first time and its lovely to lie in bed and watch the stars - they seem so much brighter here.
Day three Norseman to Cocklebiddy - the beginning of the Eyre highway, more salt lakes and the terrain starts to change getting a little more scrublike with few trees we start what is known as the 90 mile(145km) straight - this is the longest straightest road in OZ and one of the longest and straightest roads in the world - "God its straight".
The RFDS (royal flying doctor service ) uses this road as thier emergency landing strip in several places, AMAZING!.
Bush camping again tonight.
There are caves and a Bird observatory here but alas you need a fourwheel drive so we miss out this time.
Day four Cocklebiddy to Eucla
End of the ninety mile straight and we are looking for Deisel, when we left Perth we paid $1.36 per litre and now its $1.77 - a premium being in the middle of the eyre highway
We have come across some unusual trees along the way e.g. one called the underwear tree - yes its filled with the largest variety of underwear I've ever seen, there were shoe trees, and soft toy trees - I wonder what next?
We also saw some very large Wedge Tail eagles with massive wingspans just gliding- beautiful.
Were stopping at the Eucla caravan park tonight - need a decent shower!!
We are parked on the hill overlooking th Ocean , this is the first glimpse of ocean since leaving Perth, by the way we have travelled 1,607 kms to date only 2,400 to Melbourne our first longer stop for Xmas.
We are 13kms from the South Australian border and there is a quarantine check point where we will be relieved of all fruit and veg - "so guess what" we had the largest fruit salad ever for breakfast before heading out .
Will keep you posted
Pauline & Rob
